Surrey Jazz Festival
is a long-running festival with High School bands from all over the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island participating.
There are bands
playing in multiple venues throughout Sullivan Heights Secondary all day, both days.
A series of
professional clinicians adjudicate each band and then give a clinic
following each performance.
There are Junior and Senior Rep bands
performing Friday night. These bands include musicians representing the diverse schools involved in the festival.
This year we have
many Salish students performing in these Rep Bands, and we are very proud of them.
An all-female Jazz
Ensemble, the Leading Ladies Little Big Band, featuring our own student teacher, Ms. Hayley Bennett will also perform at the Friday night concert.
The Saturday night
concert will feature bands chosen to perform by the adjudicators as a showcase concert of bands which they found exceptional. Any one of our bands could be
chosen for this concert.
The festival occurs
on a ProD day , as well as a Saturday. Students are expected to
arrange their own transportation to and from the Bell Centre and encouraged to attend evening performances if possible.
Students are
encouraged to stay and hear as much other music as their schedule allows, as there will be many good bands to hear, and we are building community with our
peers from other schools and districts.
