February is always a busy month for the Jazz bands as we prepare for the Surrey Jazz Festival which this year is February 23rd and 24th at the Bell Centre for the Performing Arts.
First some information on the festival. It is the largest of its kind in Western Canada with bands coming from all around the Lower Mainland and the province. Significant awards are given, and Salish has been fortunate to receive many in its short time developing as a program.
Parents and friends are welcome to attend all the Jazz Festival performances on February 23rd and 24th at the Bell Centre.
- Friday, February 23rd: The provincial REP bands and Salish students are represented
- Saturday, February 24th: Features the high school bands chosen to be showcased. It is possible that either our Junior or Senior Jazz Band could be selected for this
IMPORTANT PARENT INFORMATION
- The Friday is a ProD and does not conflict with classes.
- No school buses will be available on the dates of the event.
Students are required to arrange transportation to and from the event. Parent helpers and I will be organizing carpooling so students who are do not have transportation can attend. Please watch for further communication.
- There is a fee of $35 at schoolcashonline.
This is due to the rental of the space and the fees for multiple adjudicators
and clinicians. Fees required are $350 per Combo and $400 for each full Jazz Band.
- Students are responsible for transporting their instrument and music to and from the event
- Dress code for all performers is our black band dresswear.
SURREY JAZZ FESTIVAL TIMES AND LOCATIONS
Friday, February 23rd
Junior Jazz band 9AM – in the small gym
- Meet at 7:45AM in the main lobby of Sullivan Heights Secondary
- All go to warm up room 8:15AM
- All go to Small Gym to perform
- 40 minute Clinic and photo follows the set
- Done by approximately 10AM
- Attend some other band’s shows if possible
Senior Jazz Band – 12:50PM in the Main Bell Centre Theatre
- Meet at 11:00AM in the main lobby of Sullivan Heights Secondary
- All go to warm up room 11:20AM
- Go to main theatre to perform
- 40 minute Clinic and photo follows the set
- Done by approximately 2PM
- Attend some other band’s shows if possible
Aron Wu/Colton Black Sextet – 2:45PM in the Library
- GO STRAIGHT TO WARM UP AFTER SENIOR JAZZ CLINIC
- Go to Library for performance
- 40 minute Clinic and photo follows the set
- Done by approximately 4PM
- Attend some other band’s shows if possible
- There is a free concert featuring the REP bands Friday night
Saturday, February 24th
Ava Mcdonough Quintet 9:30AM MPR (Multi Purpose ROOM)
- Meet at 8:15AM in the main lobby of Sullivan Heights Secondary
- All go to warm up room approx. 8:45AM
- Go to main MPR to perform
- 40 minute Clinic and photo follows the set
- Done by approximately 10:30AM
- Attend some other band’s shows if possible
Eugene Lee Combo 11:00AM Library
- Meet at 9:45AM in the main lobby of Sullivan Heights Secondary
- All go to warm up room approx. 10:15AM
- Go to main LIBRARY to perform
- 40 minute Clinic and photo follows the set
- Done by approximately 12:15PM
- Attend some other band’s shows if possible
